Design

You know, gaming laptops are often aggressively designed. ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 and G14, in 2024, have a simple design. In the front, the design is very clean with a diagonal slash cut (will be discussed later). This is made of aluminum. The ROG branding is lasered out at the bottom left corner. There are no holographic badges this year.

Interestingly, like recent Razer Blades, the chassis inside is cut from a single metal sheet for a clean and efficient keyboard area. This is aluminum as well and provides durability along with lower production costs.

In 2023, these devices had a series of customizable LEDs in the front arranged by covering a half-diagonal area. In 2024, there is a diagonal slash with slits containing LEDs. You can customize these LEDs as well. Zephyrus G16 weighs 1.85 kg and is 1.49 cm thin. Zephyrus G14 weighs around 1.5 kg and is 1.59 cm thin.

Display

The 2024 Zephyrus G16 and G14 offer both OLED panels and non-OLED variants. You must admit, OLED panels are the best for gaming. It handles color accuracy precisely and enhances refresh rates efficiently—refresh rate: 240 Hz in Zephyrus G16 and 120 Hz in Zephyrus G14.

OLED panels are really good to look at, even if you are not gaming. The OLED variant has a 2.5K (2560 x 1600, WQXGA) 16:10 aspect ratio display (Zephyrus G16) and a 3K (2880 x 1800) OLED 16:10 aspect ratio (Zephyrus G14). Both models come with MUX Switch + NVIDIA® Advanced Optimus.

OLED-burning Risks & Remedies

Even though OLED screens are the best for gaming, there is a high risk of OLED burning. OLED burning is a risk when a screen does not change its contents for a long period. While gaming, you may notice, the game’s logo, health bar, map, and some floating information do not change for a while. That may cause OLED burning. However, ASUS mentioned that these 2024 G16 and G14 models have pixel-shifting features to prevent such damage to the screen.

Keyboard & Trackpad

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 and G14 (2024) have a great keyboard and trackpad. Here is more about the keyboard and trackpad.

Keyboard

When it comes to laptops, keyboards are a very important thing to take into consideration. The Zephyrus G16 and G14 have the same keyboard. Keys are decent in size. The travel distance is good, 1.7 mm, with a key cap gap of 1.7 mm. There is no mushy feedback of the keys like Lenovo Legion’s. However, there is no “Print Screen” button on the keyboard like previous Zephyrus models. Obviously, the keyboard has a Backlit Chiclet Keyboard 1-Zone with RGB lighting, which gaming laptops do not!

Trackpad

The trackpads on ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 and G14 are massive. You might accidentally touch the trackpad while gaming because it is that big. The trackpad has no physical buttons; it is just a one-piece material.

Speakers

Both Zephyrus G16 and G14 have 6 speakers (4 dual force woofer systems with Smart Amplifier Technology and 2 Tweeters); 2 on either side of the keyboard, under the laptop’s palm rest area, and on the sides of the laptop. You can expect the audio quality to be closer to the latest 2023 MacBook Pro’s.

Both Zephyrus G16 and Zephyrus G14 feature AI noise-canceling technology, Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res certification, Smart Amp Technology, and a Built-in 3-microphone array.

Chipsets

Zephyrus G16 runs on an Intel Core Ultra chip (Core Ultra 9 185H; 2.3 GHz, 24 MB Cache, up to 5.1 GHz, 16 cores, 22 Threads; Intel® AI Boost NPU), which is coupled with RTX 4090 16 GB GDDR6, RTX 4080 12 GB GDDR6, or RTX 4090 8 GB GDDR6. Zephyrus G14 runs on the AMD 8000 series chip (R9 8945HS; 4 GHz, 2 4MB Cache, up to 5.2 GHz, 8 cores, 16 Threads); AMD Ryzen™ AI up to 39 TOPs), which is coupled with RTX 4070 8 GB GDDR6, RTX 4060 8 GB GDDR6, or RTX 4050 6 GB GDDR6. Both the chips scored around 18000+ in the Cinebench R23. However, Intel Core i9 14900HX outperforms both with a score of 31000+ (Cinebench R23).

Here’s the thing: ROG Zephyrus prioritizes the device to be thin and lightweight. Therefore, ASUS chose chips that are efficient for real-life use cases for 2024 Zephyrus laptops with high-performing GPUs. Thus, you are getting maximum efficiency while gaming or performing intense tasks if you are not into numbers.

Upgradability

Neither of these laptops has replaceable RAM. Zephyrus G16 has 16 GB x 2 LPDDR5X 7467 on board. Max Capacity: 32 GB, supports dual-channel memory. On the other hand, Zephyrus G14 comes with 16 GB x 2 LPDDR5X 6400 on board. Max Capacity: 32 GB, supports dual-channel memory.

However, you can change the SSD if you want. Zephyrus G16 offers a 2TB PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ M.2 Performance SSD, whereas Zephyrus G14 is equipped with a 1TB PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ M.2 SSD.

Battery life

Zephyrus G14 has a 90-WH battery, 4S1P, 4-cell Li-ion. ASUS provides a reversible proprietary charging break to power the 200-watt Zephyrus G16.

Zephyrus G14 has a 73-WH battery, 4S1P, and 4-cell Li-ion. ASUS provides a reversible proprietary charging break to power the 180-watt Zephyrus G14.

Both laptops support quick charging that can recharge from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. Per ASUS, “Quick-charging times apply when using the proper ASUS/ROG adapter included alongside the select model and the system is powered off (via the ‘shut down’ command). In compatible scenarios, batteries can be recharged to 50% within 30 minutes under the optimal temperature range of 20-45 degrees Celsius.”

Ports

There is a charging port, HDMI 2.1, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C support, DisplayPort™ / power delivery, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, and a 3.5 mm Combo Audio Jack on the left side. On the right side, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C supporting DisplayPort™ / power delivery and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A.

However, on the right side, only in the Zephyrus G16, there is a full-sized card reader (SD) (UHS-II, 312MB/s) and Thunderbolt™ 4 support DisplayPort™ / power delivery port. Zephyrus G14 has a micro-SD (UHS-II) card reader but no Thunderbolt port.

Miscellaneous

Both ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 and G14 come with Wi-Fi 6E(802.11ax) (Triple band) 2 x 2 and Bluetooth® 5.3 Wireless Card (*Bluetooth® version may change with OS version differences). You will be getting a 1080P FHD IR Camera for Windows Hello for signing in and video calls.
